Det er altid godt at vide noget om kunst. Uanset om du skal til cocktailparty eller du skal hjem til svigerforældrene, er det altid en god ide at kunne sige noget intellektuelt.

Det var altså stadig fx naturen de malede, men de malede mere den stemning der var på stedet en hvordan det helt konkret så ud.

Et individuelt udtryk

Efterhånden som de strømninger løb videre, kom der flere og flere behov for at male, ikke bare ens eget indtryk, men det individuelle udtryk. Fordi verden blev mere kompleks, vendte man mere blikket indad. Man begyndte at ville sige noget med sine billeder.

Denne tid var heller ikke præget af nyskabelse og skønhed, som impressionisternes, men af ødelæggelsen fra de to verdenskrige. Alt den uretfærdighed der udsprang af dem, kom til at betyde at der var mange der gerne ville fortælle om den. På den måde er ekspressionisternes verden tit mere dyster end impressionisternes.
